Dhaka City Corporation Revises Property Tax Zones Affecting 36 Wards

The Dhaka City Corporation began rolling out revised holding tax assessments on 1 July 2026 under the updated Local Government Property Valuation Rules. The change directly affects owners of residential and commercial buildings in zones that saw revaluation last year, shifting annual bills for more than 420,000 properties.

City officials completed the latest valuation cycle in March after reviewing building records and market sales data from 2024. The exercise responds to rising maintenance costs for roads, drains and street lights that the corporation lists in its 2025-26 budget documents.

Changes to household payments

Property owners in Mirpur and Mohammadpur will see the largest shifts because those wards moved into higher valuation brackets. A typical three-storey home previously assessed at Tk 18,000 per year now faces a new base rate of Tk 24,500. Tenants may encounter rent adjustments as landlords pass on the increase when leases renew.

The corporation states that revenue from the revised rates will fund an additional 180 kilometres of drain cleaning scheduled between August and December. Residents who pay on time receive a 5 percent rebate listed in the official tax circular issued on 28 June.

Payment schedule and verification steps

Tax notices will arrive by post and through the city corporation online portal by 15 August. Owners have until 30 September to file objections with supporting documents at their local ward office. After that date the new rates apply without further review for the full fiscal year.

The corporation projects collection of Tk 9.8 billion from holding taxes in the current budget paper, up from Tk 7.6 billion collected last year. Staff at the revenue department have added 12 extra counters at the Nagar Bhaban to handle expected queries during the first two weeks of August.
