Dhaka is flicking on 61 solar-powered LED streetlights this month as part of a World Bank‑funded pilot across the capital. It's a small start, barely a fragment of the city's grid, but city officials say they plan to scale to 100 solar‑powered traffic intersections next. The move, backed by the World Bank, is the most visible sign yet that Dhaka's notoriously congested streets are getting a green tech retrofit.
The pilot comes at a time when the national government is approving solar parks at a clip. Eight new solar parks, totalling 440.75 MW, were given the go‑ahead this year, and a further 23 parks representing 1,424.2 MW are in the planning pipeline. For a city that loses power during monsoon storms and swelters through heatwaves made worse by urban heat‑island effects, the shift to distributed solar is more than an environmental gesture, it's a resilience play.
Shedding Light on Dhaka's Green Infrastructure Gap
The solar streetlight pilot is being rolled out in partnership with the Dhaka North City Corporation, and the World Bank is also funding the design of 100 solar‑powered traffic intersections. It's early days: the 61 lamp posts represent a fraction of the city's total stock. But the choice of LED fixtures, which draw a fraction of the power of conventional bulbs, makes the solar arrays practical even on Dhaka's often overcast days.
The urgency is backed by hard numbers. A study by the Dhaka North City Corporation found that vegetation cover in the city dropped by 65.9 per cent between 1992 and 2022, a collapse that slashed the amount of carbon the city's trees can absorb. In response, officials are pushing rooftop gardens as a quick‑win greening solution, a way to bring some of that lost canopy back onto the built environment of concrete and brick that now dominates the skyline.
One of the few structures in Dhaka that shows what's possible is the Cityscape Tower, a commercial building designed with green architecture principles. It's not a large‑scale model, but advocates point to it as proof that sustainable design can work in a city where land prices make every square metre precious.
From Wastewater to Solar Farms: The Startup Ecosystem
Beyond streetlights and building design, Dhaka's green tech startup scene is quietly expanding. Green Technology BD, a local firm, has positioned itself as a leading provider of integrated water and wastewater treatment solutions in the country. The company's work is critical in a city where groundwater contamination and untreated sewage remain major public health issues.
On the energy side, the pipeline of 23 additional solar parks, 1,424.2 MW, suggests a growing appetite among developers and financiers for large‑scale renewable projects. Most of those parks are slated for rural areas, but the management and tech support operations are likely to be run out of Dhaka, giving local startups a role in monitoring, finance and logistics.
What happens next depends on execution. The pilot lights have to survive the monsoon. The 100 traffic intersections need to be designed and contracted. And the rooftop garden push requires both cheap materials and buy‑in from building owners who often see roof space as storage or servant quarters first. But for a city that has lost two‑thirds of its green cover in three decades, and where the grid still buckles under demand, every solar panel and every green roof is a step toward a future that doesn't run on diesel fumes alone.
