Dhaka has 17 dog-friendly parks, with at least 5 more slated to open by the end of 2026, according to the Dhaka North City Corporation.
These parks are becoming increasingly important as the city's residents look for ways to stay active and healthy. With the rising cost of gym memberships, which can range from 5,000 to 20,000 BDT per month, outdoor fitness spots are a welcome alternative. For dog owners, these parks provide a much-needed space to exercise their pets and socialize with fellow dog lovers. As the city's population grows, so does the need for community spaces that promote physical activity and social interaction.
In Dhaka, parks like Hatirjheel and Gulshan Lake Park are popular spots for dog owners and fitness enthusiasts. The Dhaka University campus, with its sprawling grounds and walking trails, is another favourite among locals. The Bangladesh Scouts Association also organises regular fitness events and activities in these parks, including yoga sessions and jogging groups. On any given morning, you can find groups of people gathered at the lake in Gulshan Park, walking or jogging with their dogs, or practicing yoga on the grass.
A recent survey conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Planners found that 75% of Dhaka's residents prefer outdoor fitness activities to gym workouts. The same survey revealed that 60% of dog owners in the city visit dog-friendly parks at least 3 times a week. With an estimated 200,000 dogs in Dhaka, these parks are playing a vital role in promoting physical activity and social interaction among residents. According to the Dhaka South City Corporation, the number of visitors to dog-friendly parks has increased by 25% in the last year alone, with an average of 1,500 visitors per day to Hatirjheel park.
As the city continues to grow and develop, it's essential to ensure that these parks are well-maintained and equipped to handle the increasing number of visitors. The Dhaka North City Corporation has allocated 10 million BDT for the development of dog-friendly parks in the upcoming fiscal year. For those looking to get involved, the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Foundation offers regular volunteer opportunities to help maintain and improve these parks. By supporting these initiatives and visiting these parks, residents can help create a healthier, more active community in Dhaka.
