The Dhaka City Corporation has launched a new initiative to provide free senior fitness programs for residents aged 60 and above, aiming to promote healthy aging and community engagement. This program is available at several locations, including the Dhaka University Gymnasium, the Ramna Park, and the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre in Gulshan.
With the rising awareness of the importance of physical activity for older adults, this initiative comes at a crucial time. Regular exercise can help prevent chronic diseases, improve mental health, and enhance overall well-being. In a city like Dhaka, where traffic congestion and pollution can make outdoor activities challenging, providing accessible and free fitness programs is a significant step towards creating a healthier community. The local council's effort to address the needs of senior citizens is particularly noteworthy, given the city's active wellness culture and the presence of numerous fitness centers and parks, such as the Hatirjheel Lake and the Baridhara Park.
The free senior fitness programs are being offered in partnership with local organizations, including the Bangladesh Sports Education Institute and the Dhaka District Sports Association. These programs include yoga, aerobics, and walking classes, all designed to cater to the needs and abilities of older adults. Specific locations where these programs are available include the Mirpur Stadium, the Dhanmondi Lake, and the Uttara Sector 3 Park. The programs are led by certified instructors who have experience working with seniors, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for participants.
According to data from the Dhaka City Corporation, over 500 seniors have already registered for the program since its launch in June 2026. The program has been allocated a budget of 5 million BDT, which will cover the costs of instructor fees, equipment, and venue rentals. With a growing elderly population in Dhaka, this initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the health and well-being of seniors in the city. As of July 2026, the program has reported a 25% increase in participation, with an average of 150 seniors attending classes per week.
For those interested in participating, registration is available online through the Dhaka City Corporation website or in-person at designated locations, including the Dhaka City Corporation office on Gulshan Avenue and the Dhaka University Campus. Classes are scheduled to run from 7:00 am to 8:00 am, Monday through Friday, and participants are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start time. With the local council's commitment to providing free senior fitness programs, Dhaka's elderly residents now have access to a valuable resource that can help them stay active, healthy, and connected with their community.
