The Dhaka City Corporation has launched a new initiative to provide free senior fitness programs for residents aged 60 and above, with classes currently being held at the Dhaka University Gymnasium and the Bangladesh Sports Council's outdoor facilities in Gulshan.
This program is particularly significant given the rising awareness of the importance of physical activity for older adults in maintaining their physical and mental health. As Dhaka's population ages, the need for accessible and affordable fitness opportunities has become increasingly pressing. With the city's active wellness culture, it is essential to ensure that all members of the community, regardless of age, have the chance to engage in regular exercise and socialize with their peers.
In addition to the Dhaka University Gymnasium and the Bangladesh Sports Council's facilities, free senior fitness classes are also being offered at the Dhanmondi Lake Park and the Ramna Park. The Dhanmondi Lake Park, located on Road 2 in the Dhanmondi Residential Area, has become a popular spot for morning walks and exercise, while the Ramna Park, situated near the Ramna Police Station on Bailey Road, provides a peaceful atmosphere for outdoor activities. The classes, which include yoga, stretching, and low-impact aerobics, are designed to be gentle on the joints and suitable for older adults with mobility issues.
According to data from the Dhaka City Corporation, over 500 seniors have already registered for the free fitness program since its launch on June 1, 2026. The program has been allocated a budget of 5 lakh BDT (approximately 4,500 USD) for the remainder of the year, which will cover instructor fees, equipment, and venue rental costs. A study by the World Health Organization has shown that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, by up to 35% in older adults. With this initiative, the Dhaka City Corporation aims to promote healthy aging and improve the overall well-being of the city's senior population.
For those interested in participating in the free senior fitness program, registration can be done in person at the Dhaka City Corporation's office on Segunbagicha Road or online through their website. Classes are held Monday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 8:00 am, and are limited to 50 participants per session. As the program continues to grow and expand to more locations, it is essential for seniors to take advantage of this opportunity to stay active, socialize, and maintain their physical and mental health.
