Initiative aims to promote healthy aging and community engagement among seniors in the city

Dhaka City Council has launched a series of free senior fitness programs, available to all residents aged 60 and above, at various community centers and parks across the city.
The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated, as Dhaka's population is rapidly aging, with the number of seniors expected to increase significantly over the next decade. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining physical and mental health, and community-based programs like these can play a vital role in promoting healthy aging and social interaction among seniors. With the rising costs of healthcare and living expenses, free programs like these are a welcome respite for many seniors who may not have the financial means to join private gyms or fitness classes.
The free senior fitness programs are being offered in partnership with local organizations, such as the Bangladesh Sports Education Institute and the Dhaka University Institute of Health Economics. Specific locations include the Dhaka City Corporation Community Center on Mirpur Road, the Dhanmondi Lake Park, and the Ramna Park. The programs include a range of activities, such as yoga, tai chi, and brisk walking, designed to be low-impact and accessible to seniors with varying levels of mobility.
According to data from the Dhaka City Council, over 500 seniors have already registered for the programs since their launch in January 2026. The council has allocated a budget of 5 million BDT to support the initiative, which will cover the costs of instructor fees, equipment, and venue rentals. A recent survey conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics found that 70% of seniors in Dhaka reported experiencing some form of physical limitation, highlighting the need for accessible and affordable fitness programs like these.
As the program continues to grow and expand, the Dhaka City Council is exploring opportunities to partner with local healthcare providers to offer additional services, such as health screenings and nutrition counseling, to program participants. The council is also working to increase awareness and outreach to seniors in underserved communities, with the goal of reaching at least 1,000 participants by the end of 2026.
For seniors interested in joining the free fitness programs, registration is available online through the Dhaka City Council website or in person at any of the participating community centers. The programs are scheduled to run throughout the year, with new sessions starting every quarter. By taking advantage of these free programs, seniors in Dhaka can stay active, engaged, and connected with their community, while also improving their overall health and well-being.
